Book Workshops
I teach a wide range of different book structures, including conventional hardback books, concertinas, single sections and stab bindings. Classes can range from half an hour to a full weekend.
In a one day workshop participants can complete a hardback book, or a number of simpler books
I organise my own workshops, and do workshops for other organisations and at festivals.
If you are part of a formal or informal group who would like workshops I can come to you and teach.
All the books I make are unique, and I encourage my workshop participants to do the same, so that all the books made on the same day with the same structure will turn out differently.
All materials are provided, along with tools to borrow or buy.

I have recently started doing talks about my books, which have been very well recieved.
Talks include an introduction to the many styles of books that I have experimented with over the years and an outline of the history and development of book binding.
I am happy to give talks to any groups during daytimes or evenings, and can adapt the talk if a group has a particular interest such as textiles, art or history.

"In March, Nina Fenner gave an enlightening talk on how books are made and the various methods of putting them together. She brought along a large range of her beautiful books that were available to handle and inspect more closely afterwards. They were fat and thin, long and short with covers made from magazine pages, exquisite leathers and cloth incorporating embroidery and beads as well as concertina books with pockets to hold paper wraps of collected seeds. There was even an apple shaped book to hold jottings on anything to do with apples. Nina’s most delightful book is fitted with a tiny paint box, palette, brush and water container so she is equipped at all times to capture whatever catches her eye. For those inspired by what they had heard and seen, Nina runs workshops in the area."

Most day workshops are £35 per person which includes materials, tea/coffee and biscuits. Bring your own lunch.

Workshops I offer to groups
My standard rate is £30 per hour plus travel, but I am willing to negotiate for fund raising events/festivals etc.
For groups up to 10 all materials are included. For larger groups I can provide a materials list for participants or provide materials for participants to buy.
These workshops can be mixed together in any combination to make up one or more days of workshop

Bind your own hardback book using traditional bookbinding techniques. Starting with folding paper, then stitching and gluing the pages and making your own personalised cover. Add a page marker, pen holder or a button closure if there is time
. You will go home with your own unique sketchbook/journal at the end of the day.
This can be done as a whole day workshop or in a simplified, smaller format as a three hour workshop

Exposed spine binding
2-3 hours
This style of book is stitched in the same way as the hardback book but there is no cover on the spine leaving the stitching exposed. This book works well with fabric/embroidered covers. The book pages open out completely flat.

Coptic Stitch
2 hour workshop
This is a very ancient exposed spine binding in which the pages are sewn onto a hard cover with the decorative stitching being visible along the spine. These books also open out completely flat.

Concertinas
1 or 2 hours
Concertinas are simple fold and glue structures with an almost endless number of variations including pockets, cut outs and layers. A couple of simple concertinas can easily be made in an hour, or several variations can be made in a two hour workshop.

These are based on a concertina but are made up of two or three layers creating a 3 dimensional landscape or theatre type book. They are wonderful for storytelling or as small sculptural books or artists books.

Like concertinas these are relatively simple fold and glue structures that can be assembled in a couple of different ways to make fun and quirky books

Another binding, like coptic, with roots in the past. In this book structure the pages are sewn directly onto a card or leather cover and the stitching is visible on the spine.

In this workshop we will make a hardback book with a variety of papers, some of which we will decorate first, and will include pockets/foldouts and the inclusion of compensation guards so that your journal doesn’t bulge if you stick lots op ephemera in it. We will look at many different ways of journalling

Artists Books
Timescale variable In this workshop we will focus on developing content and themes using a variety of simple book structures. I encourage participants to incorporate their own ideas and materials but also I have a varied collection of material for participants to use. I have collection my own and other artists work for inspiration. |
